Feels like cherry picking. If you sign UFA goalies approaching the end of their carreer (Smith, Hiller, Elliot, now Marky) of course they are about to regress. I would argue Rittich has turned out pretty good for an undrafted euro goalie who was not even that highly regarded in Europe. Now he is a full time NHLer. The goaltending has been an issue since the end of Kipper era though. But I think it's more about targeting a young talent. They just insist on throwing money at the problem with all these UFA signings, but none of it is a real long term solution.
