I guess there are two camps to BT:

Camp 1) Murray Edwards is the one who has given the edict of compete now. No re-tool or rebuild. BT does not have the freedom to do what he wants and has to make moves that are not future focussed, but on competing right now. Make the playoffs and see what happens. Murray does not want to go through the uncertainty of a rebuild.

Camp 2) Brad Treliving is the one in charge and this is his team, and his vision is the one we are seeing played out. No real emphasis on succession planning or building a deep farm system. Draft capital is a tool to acquire NHL ready players, while we won't trade all of our draft picks away if there is a deal to be had to acquire an NHL player he will likely lean towards NHL player over future assets.

Either way he is not doing a very good job. If it's Camp 1 he is failing to achieve any consistent level of success, with an edict of "compete now" he has pretty little success to hang his hat on. Camp 2, well that's even more of a mess because there is no built in excuse of "Murray told him to".
