Instead, they waited and got put over the proverbial barrel.

Players the Flames should be trading right now are Toffoli, Lewis, Lucic, Tanev and Backlund. Three of these guys are playing great and should garner big returns based on what is floating around at there. Lewis and Lucic could garner returns based on their experience. Both these guys need to be traded because the coach is over deploying them, much to the detriment of the collective team. Get the big haul, try and get the team moving in the right direction and get the next group of players you want to move and get a secondary big haul. Then focus on building to the future with the new core of Huberdeau, Kadri, Wegger et al.
Agreed, it would be so refreshing to see this mindset shift from Flames ownership and management. At least the direction of the team would be clear in everyone's mind and the fans would have something to look forward to. It doesn't hurt that this summer's draft is one of the strongest in the last 10-15 years from all accounts. I honestly think if 2 of Tofolli, Backlund, Tanev were traded at this deadline to contenders for 1st and 2nd rounders we could actually accomplish the fabled "rebuild on the fly". Having 5-6 picks in the top 60 of this years draft would go a very long way IMO to actually building a team that can compete with the likes of Colorado, Tampa, Boston, NJ, etc. in the next 3-5 years.

This current iteration of the Flames is just so mediocre I don't know how anyone could think that if we squeeked into the playoffs this year or next that we would actually have a shot the cup. Steinberg and company seem to think being cautious at this deadline is the best move and then make your moves in the off-season but after what we've seen in the Jeannot trade and others, I'm not at all convinced that the return will be higher in the summertime. Flames are likely convinced Toffoli is just entering his prime and this is what we can expect from him going forward feels bad man
