Modern Trek gets roped into this weird trope of having whichever main character Starfleet ship always be completely outclassed. This was interesting in the Star Trek 2009 reboot showing how just a mining ship from 100 years in the future was so far advanced beyond warships of the time, kind of a neat idea that made sense. But how does this weirdo bounty hunter type person have basically an invincible ship loaded with a gazillion weapons? Reminds me of Star Trek Nemesis in that way.

Federation technology should be almost untouchable, or at least only equaled by the other dominant galactic powers.
Which I always find odd.

How do these random weirdos get access to these amazing ships with super advanced weaponry and a full crew who do everything they say so that they can carry on with their very obvious personal vendettas?

Is there some sort of shadowy 'Guild of Calamitous Intent' out there that supplies unhinged loonies with ships, crews and materiel to go out and exact vengeance and cause mayhem?

Where do they come across this stuff?
