I absolutely would not give up assets to move him, but would retain cap for the short period of time. I know that cap space is an asset…but if the flames are not going to the playoffs then it doesn’t matter this season.

This is his last contract year. You can retain the max on him, without affecting anything for the future.
But he's not getting moved. And he likely vetos almost any trade anyway. It's too bad his last year (likely with any team) is ending so badly.
