Why would they not trade “core” (nebulous, undefined term- who is even a core player here?) players? Not one Calgary Flame player should be untouchable or somehow believed that this team needs to build around them. The Flames have a bunch of decent secondary pieces and no stars. The star players didn’t turn out to be stars. So, those secondary pieces should be leveraged as much as possible. Further, the players that were thought to be stars should also be jettisoned for futures if possible (and consideration of some, minimal, salary retention on bad contracts to make the deals work).
Lindholm is the type of player that can get you great future assets. This team didn’t get it done, won’t get it done, and there’s no point in waiting to summer because your return will decrease.
