The Flames never think they are out though. So if they are in a position like this year (effectively out) they still will think they are in. This team is good enough to be in that position again, more likely they are actually in with middle of the road goaltending next year. But they are not anywhere near a Stanley Cup contender.
The most likely scenario is they are a WC team next year (behind the Oilers, Knights and Kings) and they don’t sell anything, trade a 3rd rounder for a depth dman and lose in the first round. And then lose the assets in the summer of 24 because they do not have the cap space to sign everyone.
