This is from Feb 17 but it shows a pretty clear story. This team can't go down by 2+ goals. It's why I was so frustrated with people defending Markstrom letting in the first two shots.
The team is elite when the game is tied. Pretty much bang average when they have a lead. When down 1 they take risks to generate offense, but become leaky defensively.
But when down 2 goals they might as well end the game. Flames give up nothing, Flames generate nothing. Just low event hockey. Sutter rolls 4 lines and continues to preach shot volume, the other team goes into a defensive shell (hello low quality shots - look at all that red along the blueline and boards), and Flames give up no quality either allowing Markstrom to pad his stats.
But Markstrom has a .877 save percentage when down 1 and a .873 when tied and is -15.68 GSAA in those two scenarios...so they find themselves trailing by 2 way more often than they deserve to. And it ends up like tonight.
