Golden State drafted and kept players and came into a unique situation when the cap blew up due to a tv rights deal along with the best free agent come along in who knows when and signed him into that space.
Lakers traded for Gasol but had drafted players on the roster. Also traded for Davis with a bunch of good young players.
Look at thr standings those big market teams suck.
Plus the NBA is a small roster you really can't do that in the NHL.

You're forgetting that the only reason Golden State was able to retain its star players was because it's a large market.
If Curry, Thompson and Green were drafted by OKC or other small market teams, they'd be long gone.
