Those game(s) might not be important to the team then but they will be important to him on leaving a good impression. It's not like he will half-ass it because the game means little for the team.
Yes, his stats this year in the AHL are impressive. But that doesn't mean they're guaranteed to translate over to the NHL. If they did Phillips would have lit up goalies the games Sutter did play him.

It also doesn't mean his skills won't translate over to the NHL. Jake Oettenger never had a .928 save% in the minors. He seemed to play ok end of last year and in the playoffs too.
Teh kid deserves a chance, since neither of our goalies seem to be able to get it done.
