Purely commercial (and old!) Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop, Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, actually probably most of John Hughes’ films, Footloose, Back to the Future.

There’s definitely a period where movies almost had to have the summer hit single.

Kenny Loggins had his share of hits this way. Besides the ones above, also Caddyshack with “i’m alright” were themes for that timeline.
