Gaudreau and Tkachuk were 100% just playing for their next contracts. Both of them probably would have put up similar numbers with any other coach last year.
Tkachuk got out of here as soon as he could and has been somewhat open about what he thought of Sutter. Gaudreau legitimately loved it here but having to play for Sutter contributed at least a little in his decision to leave. He chose Columbus ffs.
