Maybe he just was out of shape in 21-22 and clearly never was a fit with Sutter.
Kylington really taking off hurt him too as that really blocked his opportunities.

Sutter very much dislikes out of shape players I think. It may have takenb Val a little longer to develop his work ethic especially when it was about rehab and not playing. And he just has caught on now, plus the ice time has forced it.
