The team and players were motivated to get deals done. The flames wanted to secure their long term future after their 2 superstars left in the summer and not be faced with the same problem with the players they got for Tkachuk. Weegar and Huberdeau wanted to cash in off career years and secure the bag now vs rolling the dice on a new team hoping they would have another career season. Both players offensive games have completely fallen off but at least Weegar still has elite defensive metrics.
If Hanifin is willing to stay here long term then I would be far more willing to move Weegar.

The wisdom (or lack thereof) of moving Weegar notwithstanding, I agree that Ottawa is a bit of an exception there given his ties to the area.
