Great question. I used to look to the hole and follow the ball as I struck it. I found that I would not stay down on the putt and end up getting off line as I rushed to see whether the ball was in the hole. I think the most effective is to use an alignment aid on the ball (a line or the letters on the logo) and align that with the alignment line on your putter. Align both to the intermediary point of your break, leaving you only to focus on weight and making a straight stroke through the line on the ball.
