There was no chance the Flames were going to be able to extend Huberdeau for less than the Gaudreau offer so it was either lock him up or risk losing him in free agency. There was likely no way they were trading him this season unless things went way off the rails. While it make not look great now the logic made sense.

My mistake...although he did only have 73 points in 2004 so the point remains
all those years he was in the 90s the Flames did fack all...people would certainly prefer fewer regular season points with playoff success. That goes for any player obviously
