According to the game, the infection started from bad crops. In episode 1, Joel and Sarah avoid eating any flour or bread:
- They don't have pancakes in the beginning of the episode
- Joel on Atkins diet
- Sara says no to the cookies
- Joel forgets the birthday cake


Thought that was kind of cool, and definitely not something I thought of.
