Even if they re-sign Horvat the future doesn't look that great for Islanders.
By the time next season starts:
Anders Lee: 33 - $7.0M
Brock Nelson: 32 - $6.0M
Josh Bailey: 34 - $5.0M
JG Pageau: 31 - $5.0M
Kyle Palmieri: 32 - $5.0M
So they already have 5 forwards over 31 that are locked up to $28M. Horvat will be 28 years old and will probably require at least $8M to re-sign. IMO it may take more because what incentive does he have to re-sign with the Islanders before UFA unless it's an overpayment.
So you'd have at least $36M tied up into 6 forwards that are 28 years or older - not sure that is a recipe for success.
And now also no 1st round picks in 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023. They had no second round pick in 2020, and traded their second rounder in 2021. People complain about Treliving trading picks - look at Lou.
