They seem to play with more confidence in front of him and I think from Markstroms early season yips he still hasn't earned back the teams trust. So they're trying to avoid things coming back their way by over pinching and giving up multiple breakaways?

If they thought the way you think they do, they'd only send one forechecker and keep the F3 high to the D to avoid ever giving up an odd man chance, not continue to send the opposition in alone.
