Closed captioning/subtitles at pre-40 doesn't exactly enhance the experience, either.

Yup. This is especially a pita during the winter months when you have to figure the furnace on in the background, too.
I've given up and just use subtitles now. So much nicer to not be constantly fata'ing with the volume
