I also watched this for the first time last week on the Criterion blu ray. I love watching this type of Hollywood epic that no longer gets made in this fashion. Just the scale of the thing is impressive with about a thousand extras inhabiting a whole town set that they built for the film. The photography is stunning too. It's nowhere near the reputation it historically has had, but it isn't great either. At 3 hours 40, it's definitely too long and meanders quite a bit.
