Can't see it.
I think you're still being too glib about it.

What's the contract he gets from us if he signs end of this year for next season? Let's use Joel farabee as a comparable (similar draft position but 2018, left Boston college after 1 season of ppg.) Joel got a 3 year max rookie contract at 925k, with 500k in bonus available. Not bad: 1.45M. Let's add 10% for inflation and say 1.6m available per season for Coronato. Farabee went on to earn a massive second contract, 5 mil average over 6 years. Taking him to Ufa at age 28 with 30 mil+ In his pocket.

If you follow the reasoning and coronato is worried he won't be able to play enough to get bonuses or a good second contract like farabee, then he's valuing the potential flames contract at only 925k x 2years (same time as would get him to ufa through college). He's weighing it against the value of a Harvard degree (250k + time spent), and the potential that he could earn a much higher value contract fresh out of the gates as a UFA. Fox's contract, signed the same year as farabee's, was for 925k x3 + 850k in bonuses (which he achieved.) If coronato bets on himself to earn a Harvard degree and come out with a NYR rookie max contract with bonuses to $2mil a season, it could easily be a smart money play. Let's look at this scenario to age 25:

Flames value ideal conditions (bonuses achievable, normal playing time, similar progression to farabee):
1.6m x 3 years= 4.8 mil
5.5m x 6 years= 33 mil (only half will count to total for age)
= 21.3 mil by age 25

Flames value (no bonuses, low playing time during rookie contract, ill be generous and assume sutter likes him like dube and mangi):
925,000 x 2 seasons= 1.85 mil
Bottom 6 contract (dube ish, 2.3 for 3 years)= 6.6 mil
Mangi next contract (5.8 mil)
= 13.25 mil by age 25

Skyshot Adam fox scenario:
2 years at Harvard= 250k
Max rookie contract and bonuses, 2 mil x 3 seasons= 6 mil
9.5 mil second contract
= 15.75 mil by age 25

I dont think hes as good as fox, but he also might think he'll spend time in the ahl under a Sutter regime, further diminishing Flames earnings. Imo the money argument doesn't work in this scenario, and risk of serious injury playing for Harvard seems fairly low.
