Bottom line is that there are certain legal and constitutional issues with forcing and or punishing people/employee's for certain things that may go against their religion, no matter what the scenario may be.

This goes for other NHL players and their religions too. Making reasonable accommodations for them in specific circumstances is important. NHL teams can't bench, fine, suspend Provorov for this request anymore than if a Muslim, Jewish, Christian player made requests for a prayer room, to be able to wear a cross or be served team meals without pork.

I do wonder if some of the backlash in SOME aspects is because he is Russian and everything that is going on. I don't know if some media members would be openly be bashing a player of Jewish, Muslim, Christian, black, visible minority decent. Some of the things being said may be legit defamation in some arguments.

Regardless, it's not logical to think that he is the only player who would object to this league wide. I think if polled quietly, a much larger percentage of pro athletes may object to this if there wasn't the backlash.

I can almost guarantee the teams and league is developing a policy to try and mitigate this from happening in the future. I think some people sometimes forgot that certain things are being done for optics in today's world but the details and the work needed is lacking. I think some players on the NHL's diversity committee even indicated it was kinda a farse in a lot of ways.
Most of these types of campaigns are entirely performative.
