I might be wrong here, but I sort of recall a discussion way back that a considerable number of NHL players actually retire in Buffalo. Anyone else hear something about this?
As far as the OP's thought, my guess is a lot of pro athletes (those that did well, but maybe not enough buy an island) retire where they have the most history as a player and strongest recognition- ie. increasing their chances of earning in advertisements, appearances, being a relator etc.
edit- possible the OP doesn't mean a literal retirement, but moreso signing a final big contract and then sort of fading into the abyss with a below average performance. If so, this phenomenon happens absolutely everywhere, in every sports league.
