Iginla, Bouwmeester, Phaneuf, Kiprusoff, Jokinen, Langkow, Regehr, Sarich were the highest paid Flames before they got into low value contracts.
The embarrassing trade with Toronto followed up by the horrendous deal with New York where they took multiple years of Kotalik who was a healthy scratch for a dozen games before the deal for Jokinen’s expiring contract made this team look like a joke. They kept that reputation until Burke was hired several years later.
The Flames likely could have got a Kessel like return of multiple 1sts if they moved Phaneuf shortly after they secured Bouwmeester and then used the cap space to keep the guy who just scored 39 goals and 82pts in Cammalleri. Instead they went into the 2010 draft with no pick until the 3rd round.
Massive NO to Sutter going back upstairs. Also no to Futa coming in to be his yes man

Also he did weird things like trade Wayne Primeau and a 2nd to the Leafs to unload his salary for Anton Stralman who the Flames never even took a look at before unloading him to Columbus. He only went on to play almost 1000 games.
