96 points doesn't guarantee you a spot, much less 92.
96 gives you a good chance but not a guarantee. Especially this year where 6-7 teams are tanking for Bedard meaning relatively easy points for teams competing for playoff spots.
The playoff cutline last year was 97 pts in the West and 100 pts in the East. To reach 97 points the Flames need to play .622 hockey for the rest of the season.
My point about the Avs is that they seem to be back on track and the Flames won't be supplanting them for a playoff spot. So realistically the Flames will either need to pull up their socks and get into a top 3 spot in the division (catch one of LA/Seattle/Vegas) or grab a wild card spot, which are tightly contested as a handful of teams are competing for two spots.
Point being, while things aren't as bleak as some are making them out to be, they also aren't as rosy as you're making them out to be.
