Issue is 5'10" is perfectly fine for an NHLer, hell I'm pretty sure Darryl himself is 5'10" and he was an NHLer as a 21 year old.

Size isn't just height. He did go on to say that he needs to build strength but that he believes he can do it.
I'm sure he would have said the same of Dube and Mangiapane if he was here when they first played NHL games. They often got knocked off the puck or their feet. Not everyone turns pro with the strength to play NHL minutes.
