The bigger difference is that teams can largely choose not to lock up young players to 6-8 year deals.

But you either sign (premium) older players to long deals or let them walk.

Now, you are not incorrect, but if you are going to shy away from long deals for older players, you need to be trading them before they reach UFA. Like what Florida did with Huberdeau and Weegar.
