You see...I have a theory about this. It is a two-pronged theory.
Firstly...North Americans and roundabouts are Oil and Water, they simply do not mix. There are two reasons for this, primarily we didnt really grow up with them and the vast majority of drivers dont know how to use them properly.
Furthermore, North American traffic engineers dont know how to make them properly. Case in point:
- There is a traffic circle in Edmonton with traffic lights in it. Madness.
- The traffic circle off of Highfield Road looks like it was designed by someone on Quaaludes.
You try and get people to use traffic circles and then provide them with BS, third-rate traffic circles that suck.
Secondly, Calgary (and Canada) is a cold place. Traffic circles are swell and all, but once they ice up in the winter they're a goddamned hazard.
