I might be wrong but I don't think that the senior UCP members wanted Smith in as leader. She won because of the fringe voters/party members that actually showed up? Can't remember the percentages? I believe that when the UCP loses Smith will resign and form the fringe party, splitting some of the "conservative" vote going forward.
