Yes, that is exactly what I'm suggesting.

McDavid signed his deal at the earliest possible opportunity, while he was 20 years old and it was buying ages 21-29. He would have been crazy not to...he might have been smarter to go for like 5-6 years from a destination control standpoint, but financially it probably wouldn't be a huge difference.


Robertson on the other hand was not signing 1 year in advance, and is 23. He would be insane to walk himself to age 31 unless it came with an insane premium. He's taken a modest risk and it looks likely that he'll end up with well over $130M.

Had he taken a safe $80M bet this off-season, he'd need to earn another $50M on deals signed after age 31.
