There’s nothing political about the coming $600 payments for inflation relief, oh no. The UCP tells us this payout is solely for the good of Albertans.

It’s a mysterious coincidence, therefore, that the provincial election is set for May 29.

And the key benefits expire in June.

The biggest problem with the provincial system may be some people entitled to the benefit won’t be able to apply.

A tax adviser I spoke to has many vulnerable seniors as clients. He says there’s no way some of them could register digitally, go to a registry office, or even phone the helpline the government will offer.

Jones says people in that state are likely to be receiving other benefits already. If so, they are automatically eligible and don’t have to register.

It still seems inevitable that some people will lose out, while many others will spend time swearing at their computers.

The government is taking a gamble here. There’s nothing like digital disaster to catch people’s attention.
