If I can't get a direct flight, I always connect through Seattle or San Francisco, sometimes LA. Then you clear US customs in Canada and don't have to do that again in the transfer city.
I believe transferring through Vancouver, you clear US customs there, not in Calgary. Have not done that in awhile so not 100% sure on that.
