I'd argue it has mostly been Maurice and goaltending, not the roster. Maurice has killed the teams offensive ability and confidence and while the defense hasn't been good it's not notably worse compared to last year. Goaltending has been garbage. But mostly it's Maurice, pretty much everyone on that team is underperforming under him (except Tkachuk who has more than replaced Huberdeau).
