Tbf, it seems the prototypical power forward is a dying breed, so maybe it's a reasonable term for MT these days...but he is not in the ilk of a Shanahan/Iginla/Neely/Tocchet/LeClair/Lucic/Wayne Simmonds/Tom Wilson/...Keith Tkachuk/etc
I wonder how much being his father's son skewed his perception for outsiders.

I would say you’re viewing the power forwards of yesteryear through the lens of nostalgia and yearning for the good old days.
Tkachuk is better than all but Shanahan and Iginla on that list of players you mentioned.
Tkachuk hits, fights, has oodles of skill, and I’m not sure I could pick a better net-front player in the league. The knuckle dragging power forward died with the 2004/2005 lock out. The game changed. Iginla and Bertuzzi are probably the two best examples of that. They significantly altered their physique after the lockout to get leaner and faster.
Lucic was a rare breed, and I’d say he and Wilson may be the only two players to effectively play that style of game to any real success in the modern NHL.
