The one thing that makes me believe he deserves an extension (a two-year extension) is how he recovered from the Gaudreau/Tkachuk situation. Even though it was self-inflicted he managed to come away with some good assets and turned them into a new core for the club. I think he has earned an opportunity to see what comes of that core. With the massive number of contracts ending in short order I think his tenure should be tied to those. Get over the hump or he goes when all those contracts are up. Will also coincide with the system being completely hollowed out from lack of picks, so two more years for success or he's gone.
It's quite possible that Treliving sees now as the best jumping off point because of the acclaim he gained over the summer in dealing with the hardships. If he waits too long and things don't work out in the long run, it might burn a lot of the goodwill he currently has.

I honestly think the main reason why he hasn't been extended already is because he had been given verbal security that an extension is in the cards, so he is just putting all other business first. He probably doesn't think there is a hurry to make it official.

I think there is a small chance that he wants to get a league executive position. He started and ran his own minor league, so I wonder if league management is something he is striving for. He is an ambitious person and maybe team GM was never his end game.

Then there is a smaller chance in my opinion that he wants to try his hand as GM of another NHL team. He just doesn't strike me as someone to cut and run.
