Icon31 2013-14 Kings Season

Thought this article recounting the LA Kings 2013-14 Cup winning season was very interesting with several parallels to the current Flames season.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/...2013-14-season

Some interesting (in my opinion) takeaways:

Ranked 26th in regular season goals while shooting at 6.6 percent.

Led the league in 5v5 Corsi during the regular season.

Traded for Gaborik and brought up Toffolli and Pearson from the farm team (even though Pearson went back down for a stint before sticking)

27th ranked PP in the regular season.

Finally I thought this quote from the article was interesting:

Quote:
Sutter’s team plays a tough, heavy, possession-oriented style that isn’t always pretty and can prove woefully inconsistent in the regular season. It won’t bring home a Presidents’ Trophy or rev up the hype machine the way the Chicago Blackhawks or Pittsburgh Penguins can.

With that said, it sure is successful.
So it looks like that season he wanted to get the team playing the right way then injected skilled youth from the farm later in the season - might be hope for the Pelletier and Phillips hopefuls after all.

I'm not saying this is a guarantee of what will happen here, but I sure think the parallels between the two teams are interesting and he have a head coach who has done this before. It will rely heavily on goaltending and the team continuing to gel while finding some scoring from the farm, a trade or both.
