I will cheer during the tribute video. Gaudreau has played 8 seasons in Calgary when he could have played zero just like Fox, Erixon and a few others. He signed and re-signed with the Flames, and he gave me a whole lot of 'out of my seat' moments with his skill. This is an entertainment business first and foremost, and he entertained the hell out of me many nights.
I may (but probably won't) cheer for him on his first puck touch of the night. However, that's where it stops. He will be playing for the other team, and I don't cheer for the other team unless it happens to be a spectacular end to a spectacular career. The only reason I would boo him is if Johnny does something in the game - like diving, or gets away with a high-stick, or something like that. Otherwise, I personally don't see a reason to boo him. He could have spent zero seasons here very easily, but instead gave us hope and a lot of entertainment. He chose to leave, and that's fine - his mistake, but a mistake he earned by playing here all these years. He didn't sit out, he didn't demand a trade, and he didn't become a distraction or talk poorly about the city, the organization or the fans, and that's where my personal standards are at. That's me, however. People see things differently or have different standards.

Pretty much this. I generally don't spend any energy on opposing players unless they are chirping the refs or something. The old Gretzky whiner chants were fun when he did that.
But booing a player when they touch the puck? If you have that kind of conviction, then cheer for the Flames the entire game, whether they are defending or on the attack.
