The UCP government’s plan to have residents apply to the province to get six $100 affordability payments in the new year is risky, says the Opposition NDP.

As part of a $2.8-billion inflation relief package over three years first announced by Premier Danielle Smith in late November, the government has promised the relief payments to seniors 65 and up and families with children under 18 years of age with household incomes below $180,000 per year will be sent out as early as January.

Affordability Minister Matt Jones said in early December seniors and vulnerable Albertans already on support programs will get the relief payments automatically, but those not on the programs will have to apply through an online government portal.

NDP Opposition finance critic Shannon Phillips has written to Finance Minister Travis Toews urging the government to deliver the payments through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) instead of making Albertans apply.
