The Jackets have a lot of nice prospects though. Aside from their great forward prospects, they have Jiricek, Mateychuk, and Svozil on D. That's two blue-chips and younger version of Ras.

It's reasonable to assume the Jackets will be a force in five years from now because it would take Oiler-levels of ineptitude for none of those players to pan out.

By that point, Gaudreau should still be good enough to be a contributing offensive player on a cup contender. It might cost 2-3 years of playing for a terrible team, but its obvious that Gaudreau didn't care about wasting half his prime years.
