I think this 'hate Toronto' thing has become a lot stronger in the last few years and CBC coverage of the Leafs has been a big contributer. The whole attitude of referring to the Leafs as we and including all Canadians as a matter of course fries a lot of shorts in this country and this is the funniest part, they don't even know it.

IIRC in the olden times, pre Canadian expansion, the Leafs and Canadiens mostly alternated on Hockey Night in Canada. This may have a had something to do with the Canadiens being such a great team and Montreal was bigger than Toronto. Now Toronto is Canada's business center, no question and the only time we see the Habs is when they play the Leafs.
