I'm sorry, he's not going to get much better, he's always had a poor hockey sense without the puck. He's always had pretty poor positioning. Its not a slight overpay, its actually one of the worst hand trying contract in the league, and a laughing at Holland contract. I don't blame him for taking it, his agent was screaming start the car when the offer came through.
Oh and since he's signed that contract, he's stank, he stank last year, he stanks this year.

He was good in the playoffs last year considering his injury. You’re right he has a lot of weaknesses defensively, but up until this year he was improving that. It’s a bad contract if he doesn’t improve again this year. I said that last year as well. It was a gamble the oilers took, might not pay off but I think it’s still way too early to say. He is +11 if that counts for anything but he fails the eye test so far imo.
