I think people are making too much of the opponent. The NHL is a league where anything can happen and there is no easy 2 points. You still have to work and play hard to win in this league no matter who the opponent is. What is important is that you are in the playoffs conversation once spring roles around. Absolutely.
Also, the game is played with a weirdly shaped rubber thing, which people bang around with a stick, while sliding around on ice, with metal blades strapped to their feet. So maybe there is just a tiny bit of randomness and luck involved in any given game.
