We should be comparing temps that occur with the same frequency. And we should also compare when they happen. Like it’s totally different for the low to be -30 at 3am than it is for it to be +30 from 11am to 5pm.

Because they're nice numbers away from 0. It's pretty simple instead of picking numbers you like more. You can compare +20 and -20 if you'd like. Someone who sets the air conditioning/heat to 18 degrees might have a different range they want to compare than someone who sets it at 23 degrees.
Lots of people in this forum live in a place where both +30 and -30 don't get hit too regularly so it's not unreasonable.
