One of the biggest assets you provide is the ability to disseminate information to large groups of people. Limiting the ability of your competitors to weaponize that seems reasonable.
I do agree that it reinforces the reason people leave but if you consider this a “Trust Thermocline” you have to competing things going on. How much have you lost trust in twitter verus how difficult is it to replace the the service. In my opinion making it more difficult to maintain contact lists outweighs the annoyance this creates with twitter so pushed the point of catostophic user loss out in time further.
