5 THINGS - FLAMES @ SHARKS

COLTS CONNECTIONS: Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane and defenceman Rasmus Andersson along with Sharks winger Kevin Labanc were all teammates on the Barrie Colts from 2014-2016. The trio were in the top five of Colts scoring in both seasons, with Andersson leading all Colts defenders in scoring over the two-year span with at least 60 points in both seasons.

Sunday's clash kicks off a set of road games in San Jose before the Flames finish their pre-Christmas schedule in California against the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.

Certainly the opportunity is there to string together wins, provided the Flames can start finishing their chances. The Flames were the better team for most of Friday's 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues. They couldn't find the go-ahead goal, however, despite having the upper hand in a one-sided second period in which they outshot the visitors by a 15-3 margin.

"There's pucks laying around there, but we're not putting in that extra effort to beat their man one-on-one and stuff like that," forward Elias Lindholm said. "I think we all have to look at ourselves in the mirror and be better."

How the Flames can take advantage of having the NHL’s easiest strength of schedule

The Flames will play Pacific Division opponents exclusively from here on out until the end of the month, including a four-game California road trip that begins Sunday. With the exception of Edmonton and Seattle, the Flames will play teams that are presently outside of the playoffs. Calgary’s upcoming slate of games will be crucial for them to rack up points and stay in the fight for a playoff spot of their own.
