Gone are the days when you could hone your act while touring, refine your material, getting rid of what doesn't work. Then you'd have your big televised special for which you could provide a tight, focused, hilarious set.

I don't think it's cell phones. It's the state of the current landscape. You need to be in the spotlight as much as possible and cash in on your 15 minutes of fame because being replaced by someone new tomorrow has never been more likely.

Outfits like Netflix are also part of the problem pushing out multiple shows in too short a span to grab viewers while someone's name is recognized, but the material is thinned out.

It's also setting a new lower bar standard, and in ways training the younger population to find subpar material entertaining.
