On Aug 18th, 2022, Calgary traded Monahan and a 1st rounder for diddly squat.
When you simply add up those 2 transactions you get:
Monahan (this season) + Heineman + Pitlick (last season) + 2 1st rounders for Toffoli (last year + this)
Yes Toffoli's cap hit this year is $2.125M less than Monny's.
All in all it's fantastic business by the Habs who clearly CRUSH these trades from all accounts except for the majority of CP posters it seems.
But then again i wouldn't expect much different from this board who defended the Hamonic trade for years.

A LATE first rounder in 2022.
The other first rounder is not until 2025.
The Flames are in their contention window now, and Toffoli is playing a very important role on this team.
Monahan was coming off major surgeries and there was no way of knowing how effective he would be, or if he would even be reliable health-wise.
It doesn't look like Heineman is going to pan out.
Pitlick was terrible and the Flames had to offload him.
And yes the removal of Monahan's cap hit from the books is directly what allowed the Flames to sign Kadri. No trade, no Kadri. There's no way around it. The two are directly linked.
So no, there was no "fleecing" here. And for you to suggest that there was "cap mismanagement" beforehand is just as ludicrous. Have you seen the sweetheart deals of Elias Lindholm and Rasmus Andersson? (and others)
