The Flames certainly can't make the same claim.
There was a reason why the trade was made. many here thought the Flames had committed grand larceny. They failed to understand the value of a young star playing his prime years vs. paying huge amounts on many non-prime years.

That was always the understanding. The Flames have about a 4 year window to do damage before the contracts become anchors. Once they do, that's when it'll be time for the team to go into a rebuild or at least some sort of mini-rebuild. Finish low for 2-3 years to grab quality players in the draft, then get back to contending once the bad contracts are off the books.
