I also have a Columbia down winter jacket as well. Paid less than $200 for it a few months ago because discount + circle rewards friends and family discount code + new credit card gave an insane discount on it. But even at full price, it's only around $400-500 ish which is no where near the cost of Canada Goose.

Then pants (long johns, snow pants, fleece lined etc.) are less than $100 easily.

The key to staying warm is easy. Layers. Most people should be able to stay warm up to -25C for less than $500 without too much difficulty.
I'm just going to dive in here and defend my line of thinking on the CG jacket. I grew up poor, which meant not great winter jackets, boots and gloves. As a result, I'm a sucker for buying good jackets now. Do I need a parka like that? Maybe, maybe not. But I won't skimp on jackets/boots/gloves as an adult because I had too many days "suffering" without what I consider proper gear growing up.

Thankfully, that Eddie Bauer jacket posted earlier is a bomber because I prefer the longer jacket...otherwise I'd probably consider it!
